Women’s Open … was a KO!

Those who were lucky enough to attend the AIG Women’s Open in St Andrews over the last week were treated to a spectacle of golf, many free events and activities as well as a brilliant concert in the Open Village on Saturday night featuring Fleur East and Tom Grennan.

But it was the golf that stole the show with New Zealand’s Lydia Ko taking the title after a nail-biting final few holes. As the Open came to a close on Sunday evening, a handful of the world’s best women’ golfers battled down the back 9 for the lead. As in so many contests through the years, the infamous Road Hole was the undoing of some.

By the time Lydia reached the 18th, she sank a birdie on the final hole to secure -7 for the tournament. As much as others chased, they came up short.

The clouds cleared, the sun made a special appearance for golden hour and Lydia was crowned 2024 AIG Women’s Open Champion – adding to her recent Olympic gold!

Throughout the week, players fought against unrelenting winds that challenged the world’s best throughout.

It was fantastic to see so many young families attending – especially on the Saturday. As the sun set in the west, Fleur East’s set saw the Village come alive. Headliner, Tom Grennan, put on a near two-hour spectacular show with his band that had young and not so young dancing ‘neath a rising moon.

When spectators returned for the Sunday, the clouds gathered once more – and blasting winds with near constant drizzle made sure the low scoring of the earlier rounds was not repeated. It was especially tough at the Eden estuary where players were battered through holes seven to twelve.

The crowds may not have been as those for the 150th Men’s Open in 2022, but that gave everyone who did attend great access to watch the players close up – green-side views across the course enabling all to spy their favourite competitors as well as those in a media coverage including the legend Dame Laura Davies.

A special mention should also go to Lottie Woad who finished as the leading Amateur.
